FSC® is an independent, international non-governmental, non-profit organization established in 1993 to promote responsible management of forests and plantations.

Its members include NGOs and environmental groups (WWF, Greenpeace), social groups (National Aboriginal Forestry Association of Canada), forest owners, industries that trade and process wood and paper (Tetra Pak, Mondi), large distribution groups, researchers, and technicians, totaling nearly 900 members.

FSC aims to be a benchmark in the legality and sustainability of the wood-paper supply chain, in accordance with the latest standards for responsible forest resource management.

FSC issues three types of certifications, linked to the different components of forest products, production stages, and the subsequent progression of products through the chain of custody:

– Forest Management (FM), issued to forest managers and owners whose management practices meet the requirements of FSC Principles and Criteria;

– Chain of Custody (CoC), ensuring FSC-certified material and derived products throughout the supply chain, from forest to store;

– Controlled Wood (CW), created to meet the growing demand for certified material by allowing a category of input that, while not certified, provides sufficient guarantees to companies and consumers by meeting minimum criteria established by the Forest Stewardship Council.

“Forest management certification” refers to a recognized and proven verification procedure that leads to the issuance of a certificate by an independent body, attesting that forestry management practices meet specific “sustainability” requirements. A fundamental issue in the application of eco-certification systems lies in defining the criteria and indicators of “sustainable forest management” (SFM), that is, quantitative and qualitative (descriptive) parameters that, when periodically measured or observed, allow the assessment of the environmental performance and sustainability of forest management systems.

The PEFC forest certification scheme is based on three fundamental principles:

  1. Compliance with the criteria and indicators defined at the Ministerial Conferences for the Protection of Forests in Europe (Helsinki 1993 – Lisbon 1998), which initiated the “Pan-European Process.”
  2. Application at the regional or group level (although individual adherence is equally possible).
  3. Inspections and certification entrusted to an independent and accredited third party (source: PEFC ITALIA).
